A bookshelf with an extra story to tell

From ‘The Spaces in Between’ series

Cawston photographed this bookcase in an old English Heritage Building in Cornwall. At first glance you see an aesthetic, charismatic and well organised bookcase, with beautiful colours playing off one another. However, Cawston implores you to pay  attention to the details, as the bookcase is not the primary inspiration for this piece. What happens when you start to look a it more closely? Is there perhaps something you didn’t quite notice at first? Is there something that makes pause and think, wait a second…?

A corner of a letter is seen peeking out from below a shelf just left of the centre. You can’t un-see it and eventually one begins to formulate all kinds of question. Where did it come from, who put it there, what does it say? Of all the books on show, a hidden letter may be what steals your curiosity the most.

Cawston intended it to be this way. After learning about the letter the narrative of it just being about a bookcase is shifted.

A larger format bespoke edition is also available on request.  This custom edition of 3 pieces is produced to a client’s specifications.  Typically this is for pieces greater than 120cm and up to 230cm on the longest side.  Please contact us for further details.
