The town of Baragoi is half a day’s drive from Lake Turkana. It is a green oasis amidst a parched landscape. The majority of the town’s inhabitants, including this striking woman, are of the Turkana culture.
She was part of a large crowd of women singing loudly in the Easter Sunday procession, holding aloft a huge wooden cross. Christianity is common amongst remote northern Kenyan communities. Her large metal leaf earrings and single metal hoop around her neck shows she is married.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and in a natural state – ie in the subjects day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.
